I wrote about the difficulties of correlation studies and in particular; vaccines and Autism. Last week there was a landmark case (The Poling family as reported on CBS News) linking the two in this one particular case. In the Poling case the child received 9 doses of vaccines in 5 shots and it was determined that this aggravated a cell disorder. Unfortunately it will probably be more years of research and more years of lawsuits before it is determined if this was an isolated case due to a unique set of factors, or more widespread.
This case is probably of little comfort to families wondering if they should vaccinate their children. However, I am hoping that it could prompt pediatrician's to examine whether or not they should administer vaccines differently.
There may be dangers in spacing vaccines out, I don't know, but giving parents and doctors more informed guidelines to reduce risks would be helpful. For information on what the CDC said about the Poling case (very little) and what they say about vaccines go to the CDC website. For parent resources on Autism.
